What it is
Shingles is a painful rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox reactivating in the body.
Common symptoms
- Burning or tingling pain, usually on one side of the body
- A rash of blisters that scab over
How we can help at Berkeley Pharmacy
Shingles is best treated early — our pharmacist can assess it and may supply antiviral medicine, ideally within 3 days of the rash appearing.
This is part of the NHS Pharmacy First service — free on the NHS, so there’s nothing to pay for the consultation or any NHS medicines supplied.
Self-care tips
- Take painkillers
- Keep the rash clean and dry
- Wear loose clothing
- Avoid close contact with anyone who is pregnant and has not had chickenpox, newborn babies, or people with a weakened immune system
When to get urgent help
- Shingles near the eye
- A widespread rash
- A weakened immune system
- Feeling very unwell — seek help urgently
