About this service

If you need protection against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B, the combined vaccine lets you cover both in a single course, with fewer injections and fewer appointments than having the two separately. Hepatitis A is caught from food and water, while hepatitis B is spread through blood and body fluids, so together they are a sensible choice for many longer or more adventurous trips. At Berkeley Pharmacy our travel clinic offers the combined vaccine after a full risk assessment.

The standard adult course is three doses at zero, one and six months, with an accelerated schedule available for adults travelling at short notice, and a paediatric formulation from one year of age. We welcome travellers from Berkeley, Dursley, Cam, Thornbury and the wider Gloucestershire area, and we will talk you through which schedule fits your departure date and your plans.

What the combined vaccine is

The combined vaccine protects against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B in one injection, which means fewer appointments and fewer needles than having the two separately. The standard adult course is three doses at zero, one and six months. An accelerated course of zero, seven and 21 days is available for adults aged 18 and over travelling at short notice, with a booster at twelve months.

A paediatric formulation is available from one year of age and is usually given as three doses at zero, one and six months. Protection against hepatitis A is long lasting once the course is complete, and against hepatitis B is long lasting in most people.

How it works

A simple, consistent process for every service at Berkeley Pharmacy.

Get in touch

Call us or use our contact form to arrange a consultation.

Consultation

A private, face-to-face appointment with our pharmacist in our Berkeley consultation room.

Clinical assessment

We review your medical history and confirm whether the service is suitable for you.

Treatment or referral

If it is suitable we treat you the same day; if not, we explain why and advise on the best next step.

What to expect at your appointment

Your appointment begins with a full travel health risk assessment so we can confirm the combined vaccine is the right choice for your trip. We then compare the standard and accelerated schedules against your departure date, so you know exactly what fits.

  • The injection is given into your upper arm
  • All follow up appointments are booked before you leave
  • A written record for your travel documents and, with your consent, a note to your GP

Aftercare and safety

A sore arm, tiredness and a mild headache are common and settle quickly. It is important to complete the full course for lasting protection, and to note the twelve month booster if you had the accelerated schedule.

  • Continue with food and water hygiene, and take the usual precautions around blood and body fluids
  • If your plans change and you cannot finish before you go, contact us and we will advise on the best plan rather than starting again

Frequently asked questions

Is the combined hepatitis A and B vaccine as effective as having them separately?

Yes. The combined vaccine protects against both infections in one injection and is as effective as having the two separately, with the advantage of fewer appointments and fewer needles. We will confirm at your assessment whether it is the right choice for your trip.

How many injections will I need?

The standard adult course is three doses at zero, one and six months. The accelerated course for adults aged 18 and over is zero, seven and 21 days, with a booster at twelve months. The paediatric formulation from one year of age is usually three doses at zero, one and six months.

Can I have the accelerated course before a last minute trip?

Yes, adults aged 18 and over travelling at short notice can have the accelerated course of zero, seven and 21 days, with a booster at twelve months. We will compare it against your departure date at your assessment and advise honestly on what is achievable.

Is there a version for children?

Yes, a paediatric formulation is available from one year of age and is usually given as three doses at zero, one and six months. The accelerated 21 day schedule is not used for under 18s. We will confirm the right option for your child at the assessment.

How long does protection last?

Protection against hepatitis A is long lasting once the course is complete, and against hepatitis B is long lasting in most people. If you had the accelerated schedule, the twelve month booster is important for lasting cover, so we will remind you when it is due.

What if I have already had hepatitis A vaccination?

If you have already completed a hepatitis A course, you may not need it again for many years, and a hepatitis B only course may be more appropriate. Bring any records you have to your appointment and we will advise on the best option rather than repeating cover you already have.

How we can supply treatment without a GP appointment

Some treatments at Berkeley Pharmacy are supplied under a Patient Group Direction, or PGD – a written instruction, signed by a doctor and a pharmacist, that legally allows our trained pharmacists to supply and administer specified medicines to people who meet defined clinical criteria, without a prescription from your GP. If you do not meet the criteria set out in the PGD we cannot supply the treatment, and we will explain why and advise you on the best next step. Our pharmacists also work as independent prescribers where that is appropriate.
