What it is
Impetigo is a common and very contagious bacterial skin infection.
Common symptoms
- Red sores or blisters, often around the nose and mouth
- Sores that burst and leave golden-brown crusts
How we can help at Berkeley Pharmacy
Our pharmacist can assess it and, where appropriate, supply an antibiotic cream or tablets.
This is part of the NHS Pharmacy First service — free on the NHS, so there’s nothing to pay for the consultation or any NHS medicines supplied.
Self-care tips
- It spreads easily — wash your hands often
- Do not share towels or flannels
- Stay off school or work until the sores have healed or you have been on treatment for 48 hours
When to get urgent help
- If it is widespread
- If it keeps coming back
- If it is not improving with treatment
- If you feel unwell
If you’re not sure, call 111 for free NHS advice, or 999 in an emergency.
