Urinary tract infection (UTI)

Who it’s for: Women aged 16 to 64

What it is

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the bladder or urinary system, which is common in women.

Common symptoms

  • Pain or a burning feeling when peeing
  • Needing to pee more often or more urgently
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Lower tummy discomfort

How we can help at Berkeley Pharmacy

Our pharmacist can assess your symptoms and, where appropriate, supply antibiotics for an uncomplicated lower UTI in women aged 16 to 64.

This is part of the NHS Pharmacy First service — free on the NHS, so there’s nothing to pay for the consultation or any NHS medicines supplied.

Self-care tips

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Take painkillers such as paracetamol to ease discomfort

When to get urgent help

  • If you are pregnant
  • Blood in your urine
  • A fever
  • Pain in your back or side (which could suggest a kidney infection)
  • If symptoms do not improve
  • If you keep getting UTIs

If you’re not sure, call 111 for free NHS advice, or 999 in an emergency.
