About this service
The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective vaccinations available, but not everyone was offered it at school, and many adults who missed it would still benefit from the protection. At Berkeley Pharmacy we offer private HPV vaccination for teenagers and adults, including people who missed the school programme, who have moved to the UK, or who want the protection as an adult. There is no need for a GP referral, and we plan the course around your dates so it fits your life.
We take the time to understand your age, vaccination history and any previous doses, because this is what determines whether you need two or three doses. We welcome people from Berkeley, Dursley, Cam, Stroud and across Gloucestershire, and we will always remind you that vaccination does not replace cervical screening, which should continue as invited.
What HPV is and how the vaccine helps
Human papillomavirus is a very common group of viruses passed on through close skin to skin and sexual contact, and most people are exposed at some point. Most infections clear on their own, but persistent infection with certain high risk types can lead to cervical cancer and to cancers of the anus, penis, vulva, vagina, mouth and throat, while other types cause genital warts. The vaccine used in the UK protects against nine types of HPV.
People who start the course before their 15th birthday usually need two doses, given between six and 24 months apart, while those starting at 15 or older, and people with a weakened immune system, usually need three doses over six months. It is licensed from nine years of age. The NHS offers HPV vaccination in school year eight and to some other groups, so private vaccination is mainly for people who missed it, who have moved to the UK, or who want it as an adult. Vaccination does not replace cervical screening, which should continue as invited.

Call us or use our contact form to arrange a consultation.
Consultation
A private, face-to-face appointment with our pharmacist in our Berkeley consultation room.
Clinical assessment
We review your medical history and confirm whether the service is suitable for you.
Treatment or referral
If it is suitable we treat you the same day; if not, we explain why and advise on the best next step.
What to expect at your appointment
Your appointment begins with a private consultation covering your age, vaccination history and any previous doses, so we can work out whether you need two or three doses, and a clear explanation of what the vaccine does and does not protect against.
- The injection into your upper arm
- The remaining appointments booked before you leave
- A reminder that cervical screening should continue as normal
- A written record and, with your consent, a note to your GP
Aftercare and safety
A sore, red arm is very common, and headache, tiredness or feeling slightly unwell can occur for a day or two. Some younger people feel faint after any injection, so we will ask you to sit for a few minutes afterwards. Complete the full course, because partial courses give less protection, and keep attending cervical screening when invited, as the vaccine does not cover every high risk type.
- Contact us if you miss an appointment and we will advise on the best way to catch up
- Keep your vaccination record with your other health information
- Call us on 01453 810316 if you have any questions between doses
Frequently asked questions
Who can have the HPV vaccine privately in the UK?
The vaccine is licensed from nine years of age with no upper age limit. Private vaccination is mainly for people who missed the school programme, who have moved to the UK, or who want the protection as an adult, including men who have sex with men who may not have been offered it at school.
How many doses will I need?
People who start the course before their 15th birthday usually need two doses, given between six and 24 months apart, while those starting at 15 or older, and people with a weakened immune system, usually need three doses over six months. We work out your schedule at your first appointment.
Is there an upper age limit for HPV vaccination?
There is no upper age limit in the licence, although the vaccine works best when given before any exposure to HPV. Adults who want protection, including those with new or changing relationships, can still benefit, and we will give you honest advice about the likely benefit for you at your consultation.
Do I still need cervical screening after the vaccine?
Yes. The vaccine does not cover every high risk type of HPV, so cervical screening should continue exactly as invited. Vaccination and screening together give you the best possible protection against cervical cancer.
Can men and boys have the HPV vaccine?
Yes. The vaccine is licensed from nine years of age for everyone, and it protects against cancers of the anus, penis, mouth and throat as well as genital warts. Men who have sex with men may not have been offered the vaccine at school and are particularly encouraged to consider it.
What if I only had one dose at school?
If you started but did not complete the course, we can assess what you have had and plan the remaining doses to complete your protection. Contact us and bring any records you have, and we will work out the best way to catch up.
How we can supply treatment without a GP appointment
Some treatments at Berkeley Pharmacy are supplied under a Patient Group Direction, or PGD – a written instruction, signed by a doctor and a pharmacist, that legally allows our trained pharmacists to supply and administer specified medicines to people who meet defined clinical criteria, without a prescription from your GP. If you do not meet the criteria set out in the PGD we cannot supply the treatment, and we will explain why and advise you on the best next step. Our pharmacists also work as independent prescribers where that is appropriate.
