About this service
Our weight management service starts with a private consultation in our Berkeley consultation room, where we take the time to understand your health, your history with weight, what has and has not worked for you before, and what you want to achieve. We measure your height, weight and waist in the pharmacy rather than relying on numbers you give us over the internet, and we check your blood pressure.
We review your medical history, your current medicines and any conditions that affect weight or that weight affects, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, joint pain and fatty liver. We talk through the realistic options for you, which always include practical changes to eating, activity, sleep and habits, because these matter whatever else you do. If a clinical treatment is appropriate for you, our prescriber will discuss the options with you during that consultation; we do not advertise treatments, and any options and their costs are discussed only in the consultation. Ongoing review appointments are part of the service, because support over time is what makes the difference, and we will always be honest with you if we do not think this service is the right route.
What this service is
Weight is a health matter, not a matter of willpower, and it is shaped by far more than what you eat. Genetics, hormones, sleep, stress, certain medicines and long term conditions all play a part, which is why a proper assessment matters before any decision is made.
Our service is built around that assessment and the support that follows it, rather than around a single product or a quick answer. We look at the whole picture, talk through what is realistic for you, and agree a plan you can actually keep to, with review appointments to keep you on track over time.

What to expect at your appointment
Your first appointment is private and unhurried, in our Berkeley consultation room. We go through everything with you before agreeing any plan.

- An honest conversation about what is realistic for you
- A written plan you take away

Most of the value in this service is in the ongoing support, so please come to your review appointments. Small, sustainable changes to what you eat, how much you move and how well you sleep are the foundation of everything we discuss.

What happens at a weight management consultation?
Your consultation is private and face to face in our Berkeley consultation room. We take the time to understand your health, your history with weight, what has and has not worked for you before, and what you want to achieve. We measure your height, weight and waist in the pharmacy and check your blood pressure, review your medical history and current medicines, and talk through the realistic options for you before agreeing a written plan.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you do not need a referral from your GP to use this service. You can book directly with us. With your consent, we will let your GP know that you are using the service, because your GP should be aware of any care you receive, but you do not need their permission to start.
Will you weigh and measure me in the pharmacy?
Yes. We measure your height, weight and waist in the pharmacy rather than relying on numbers you give us over the internet, and we check your blood pressure. Having accurate measurements taken by a trained member of the team is an important part of a proper clinical assessment.
Is this service suitable if I have tried to lose weight before?
Yes, very much so. Many people who come to us have tried to lose weight before, and understanding what has and has not worked for you is a key part of the consultation. We review your past attempts alongside your medical history to build a plan that is realistic and sustainable for you.
Will my GP be told I am using the service?
With your consent, yes. We will let your GP know that you are using the service, because your GP should be aware of any care you receive. Nothing leaves the pharmacy without your consent, and if you would prefer we do not contact your GP, we will discuss that with you.
How much does it cost?
We do not publish prices for this service, and we will explain the cost clearly at your consultation before you decide anything.
How we can supply treatment without a GP appointment
Some treatments at Berkeley Pharmacy are supplied under a Patient Group Direction, or PGD – a written instruction, signed by a doctor and a pharmacist, that legally allows our trained pharmacists to supply and administer specified medicines to people who meet defined clinical criteria, without a prescription from your GP. If you do not meet the criteria set out in the PGD we cannot supply the treatment, and we will explain why and advise you on the best next step. Our pharmacists also work as independent prescribers where that is appropriate.

Berkeley Pharmacy is on Market Place in the centre of Berkeley, with easy access from junctions 13 and 14 of the M5. We welcome patients from Berkeley, Sharpness, Newport, Berkeley Heath, Alkington, Ham, Stone and Rockhampton, and we are a short drive from Cam, Dursley, Slimbridge, Cambridge, Falfield, Charfield, Tortworth, Cromhall, Oldbury-on-Severn, Wotton-under-Edge, Thornbury, Frampton on Severn and Stonehouse. Patients also travel to us from Stroud, Nailsworth, Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Tetbury and Gloucester.
