This page is factual information, not an advertisement. It is intended for people who are already using or considering our service and want to read about the treatments a prescriber may discuss with them. It is not a recommendation, and it does not mean any of these treatments is suitable for you. Suitability is decided only after a consultation and clinical assessment.
The condition it is used for
Adapalene is a retinoid applied to the skin for acne.
What it is and how it is taken
Adapalene is a topical treatment applied as a thin layer once daily at night to the whole affected area rather than dabbed onto individual spots, on clean dry skin.
How it is usually used
It is used regularly across the whole affected area, not as a spot treatment. It is part of a step-up acne plan and is often combined with other treatments.
More common side effects
The more common side effects are dryness, redness, peeling, stinging and increased sensitivity to sunlight, which are usually worst in the first few weeks and settle as the skin adjusts.
Who it is generally not suitable for
It is generally not suitable in pregnancy, when trying to conceive or while breastfeeding, and it should not be applied to broken, eczematous or sunburned skin.
Key safety points
- It takes eight to twelve weeks before there is anything meaningful to judge, and skin can look worse before it looks better.
- Starting every other night and building up reduces irritation.
- Use a simple non-comedogenic moisturiser and a daily sunscreen.
- Avoid using it at the same time as harsh scrubs, strong toners or other exfoliating acids.
Other options
Other medicines and approaches exist for acne, and which (if any) is suitable for you is decided at your consultation and clinical assessment.
If you experience a side effect from any medicine you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
