This page is factual information, not an advertisement. It is intended for people who are already using or considering our service and want to read about the treatments a prescriber may discuss with them. It is not a recommendation, and it does not mean any of these treatments is suitable for you. Suitability is decided only after a consultation and clinical assessment.

The condition it is used for

Azelastine nasal spray is an antihistamine delivered directly into the nose for hay fever and allergic rhinitis.

What it is and how it is taken

Azelastine nasal spray is used as a spray into each nostril, usually twice daily, and it begins working within minutes, which makes it useful for breakthrough symptoms as well as regular use.

How it is usually used

It is used regularly and can also be used for quick relief of breakthrough symptoms, as part of a step-up plan for allergic rhinitis.

More common side effects

The more common side effects are a bitter taste, nasal irritation, sneezing and occasional nosebleeds.

Who it is generally not suitable for

It is generally well tolerated, and any cautions are discussed at your consultation based on your history.

Key safety points

  • Technique matters more than most people realise, so aim the nozzle outwards towards the ear on that side rather than up the middle of the nose, keep your head slightly forward, and breathe in gently without sniffing hard, which reduces both the bitter taste and nosebleeds.
  • A bitter taste usually means it has run down the back of the throat, which technique will fix.
  • Tell us if you get repeated nosebleeds.
  • A full review of your symptoms and other treatments is part of the consultation.

Other options

Other medicines and approaches exist for hay fever, and which (if any) is suitable for you is decided at your consultation and clinical assessment.

If you experience a side effect from any medicine you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
