This page is factual information, not an advertisement. It is intended for people who are already using or considering our service and want to read about the treatments a prescriber may discuss with them. It is not a recommendation, and it does not mean any of these treatments is suitable for you. Suitability is decided only after a consultation and clinical assessment.

The condition it is used for

Azelastine with fluticasone nasal spray is a nasal spray combining an antihistamine with a corticosteroid, used for moderate to severe allergic rhinitis where a single agent has not been enough.

What it is and how it is taken

Azelastine with fluticasone nasal spray is used as a spray into each nostril twice daily, and it needs regular daily use rather than use only on bad days.

How it is usually used

It is used regularly every day for moderate to severe allergic rhinitis, as part of a step-up plan reviewed by your prescriber.

More common side effects

The more common side effects are a bitter taste, nasal irritation, dryness, sneezing, headache and nosebleeds.

Who it is generally not suitable for

It is generally used with caution in recent nasal surgery or injury, and in people with untreated nasal infection.

Key safety points

  • Correct technique is essential, aiming outwards towards the ear, head slightly forward, no hard sniffing.
  • Give it at least two weeks of consistent daily use before judging it.
  • Long term use should be reviewed rather than continued indefinitely without discussion.
  • Tell us about persistent nosebleeds or nasal discomfort.

Other options

Other medicines and approaches exist for hay fever, and which (if any) is suitable for you is decided at your consultation and clinical assessment.

If you experience a side effect from any medicine you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
