This page is factual information, not an advertisement. It is intended for people who are already using or considering our service and want to read about the treatments a prescriber may discuss with them. It is not a recommendation, and it does not mean any of these treatments is suitable for you. Suitability is decided only after a consultation and clinical assessment.

The condition it is used for

Fexofenadine is an antihistamine taken by mouth for hay fever and other allergic conditions.

What it is and how it is taken

Fexofenadine is a medicine taken as a tablet once daily, and different strengths are used for different ages and indications, with the lower strength available as a pharmacy medicine and higher strengths available only on prescription. It is one of the less sedating antihistamines, although a minority of people still notice some drowsiness.

How it is usually used

It is taken regularly during the hay fever season or as advised for other allergic conditions, and the strength is chosen to match the person and the condition being treated.

More common side effects

The more common side effects are headache, drowsiness, nausea and dry mouth.

Who it is generally not suitable for

It is generally used with caution in significant kidney problems and in older adults.

Key safety points

  • Do not take it with fruit juice, particularly grapefruit, orange or apple juice, which reduce how much is absorbed, and take it with water instead.
  • Separate it by a couple of hours from indigestion remedies containing aluminium or magnesium.
  • If it makes you drowsy, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • A full review of your medicines and health is part of the consultation.

Other options

Other medicines and approaches exist for hay fever, and which (if any) is suitable for you is decided at your consultation and clinical assessment.

If you experience a side effect from any medicine you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
