The condition it is used for
Tadalafil is used for erectile dysfunction in men.
What it is and how it is taken
Tadalafil is a prescription-only medicine taken by mouth. It is available both as an as-needed dose and as a lower daily dose, and it works only with sexual stimulation. Food does not meaningfully affect it.
How it is usually used
It has a longer duration of action than some alternatives, which is why some people are offered the daily option. It does not increase sexual desire and it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
More common side effects
The more common side effects are headache, indigestion, back pain, muscle aches, flushing and a blocked nose.
Who it is generally not suitable for
It is generally not suitable for anyone taking nitrates in any form or riociguat. It needs careful assessment in significant heart disease, recent heart attack or stroke, low blood pressure and severe liver or kidney problems.
Key safety points
- Seek emergency help for an erection lasting more than four hours, and for sudden loss of vision or hearing.
- It must not be taken with nitrates, as the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure.
- Back and muscle pain usually appears 12 to 24 hours after a dose and settles within two days.
- A full review of your medicines and health is part of the consultation.
Other options
Other medicines and approaches exist for erectile dysfunction, and which (if any) is suitable for you is decided at your consultation and clinical assessment.
If you experience a side effect from any medicine you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
