This page is factual information, not an advertisement. It is intended for people who are already using or considering our service and want to read about the treatments a prescriber may discuss with them. It is not a recommendation, and it does not mean any of these treatments is suitable for you. Suitability is decided only after a consultation and clinical assessment.

The condition it is used for

Vardenafil is used for erectile dysfunction in men.

What it is and how it is taken

Vardenafil is a prescription-only medicine taken by mouth as needed, usually around 25 to 60 minutes before sex. It works only with sexual stimulation. A high fat meal can delay how quickly it takes effect.

How it is usually used

It is taken when needed, ahead of sexual activity. It does not increase sexual desire and it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

More common side effects

The more common side effects are headache, flushing, a blocked nose, indigestion and dizziness.

Who it is generally not suitable for

It is generally not suitable for anyone taking nitrates in any form or riociguat, or for people taking certain other medicines, including some used for HIV, some antifungals and some heart rhythm medicines. It needs careful assessment in significant heart disease, low blood pressure, severe liver problems and certain inherited eye conditions.

Key safety points

  • Seek emergency help for an erection lasting more than four hours, and for sudden loss of vision or hearing.
  • It must not be taken with nitrates, as the combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure.
  • It can affect heart rhythm in susceptible people, so a full medicines review matters.
  • A full review of your medicines and health is part of the consultation.

Other options

Other medicines and approaches exist for erectile dysfunction, and which (if any) is suitable for you is decided at your consultation and clinical assessment.

If you experience a side effect from any medicine you can report it through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme at yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk. Always read the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.
