About this service

Erectile dysfunction is common and becomes more common with age, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. It can be caused or made worse by stress, anxiety, relationship difficulties, tiredness, alcohol, smoking and being overweight, and it can also be an early warning sign of an underlying physical problem, particularly cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or low testosterone. Because of that, a good erectile dysfunction consultation is also a health check, and that is how we treat it.

Our pharmacist will talk through your symptoms, how long they have been going on and whether they came on suddenly or gradually, review your medical history and current medicines, since some medicines contribute to the problem, and check your blood pressure. If treatment is clinically appropriate for you, our prescriber will discuss the options with you during your consultation; we do not advertise treatments, and any options and their costs are discussed only in the consultation. Where the picture suggests something that needs further investigation, we will refer you to your GP and explain why.

What erectile dysfunction is

Erectile dysfunction is the consistent inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. It becomes more common with age but is not an inevitable part of getting older, and it is very often manageable once the cause is understood.

It can have physical causes, psychological causes, or a mixture of both, and the two are often linked. Because the blood vessels involved are similar to those in the heart, erectile dysfunction can sometimes be an early warning of cardiovascular disease, which is why we treat the consultation as a health check and not just a conversation about the symptom itself.

Consultation

A private, face-to-face appointment with our pharmacist in our Berkeley consultation room.

Clinical assessment

We review your medical history and confirm whether the service is suitable for you.

Treatment or referral

If it is suitable we treat you the same day; if not, we explain why and advise on the best next step.

What to expect at your appointment

Your consultation is private and unhurried, in our consultation room with no one else able to hear. We ask questions only because they matter clinically.

  • A private, unhurried appointment in our consultation room, with no one else able to hear
  • Questions about your symptoms, general health, mood, alcohol, smoking and relationships, asked sensitively and only because they matter clinically
  • A review of your medicines and medical history
  • A blood pressure check, and a discussion of your wider cardiovascular risk
  • A clear explanation of the next steps, whatever they are
  • Where appropriate, treatment on the day
  • With your consent, a note to your GP

Aftercare and safety

Lifestyle changes genuinely help, particularly stopping smoking, cutting down alcohol, being more active and losing weight if you need to. If we have referred you to your GP, please go, because the referral is usually about your heart health rather than the symptom itself.

  • Get urgent medical help for chest pain, breathlessness or an erection lasting more than four hours
  • Come back to us if things change or if you have questions
  • Nothing you tell us leaves the pharmacy without your consent

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to see my GP first?

No, you do not need to see your GP first. You can book a private consultation with us directly. Because the consultation includes a health check, if we think your GP should be involved we will refer you and explain why, but you do not need a GP appointment to start.

Is the consultation private and confidential?

Yes. Your consultation takes place in our private consultation room with the door closed, and no one else can hear. Nothing you tell us leaves the pharmacy without your consent, and we approach the conversation with respect and without judgement.

Why do you check my blood pressure?

Because erectile dysfunction can be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and other underlying problems. Checking your blood pressure and reviewing your wider cardiovascular risk is an important part of understanding what is going on, and it is why we treat the consultation as a health check rather than just a conversation about the symptom.

Can erectile dysfunction be a sign of something more serious?

Yes, it can be. It can be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or low testosterone, which is why we review your medical history, check your blood pressure and refer you for further investigation where the picture suggests it.

What if the consultation shows I need further investigation?

If the picture suggests something that needs further investigation, we will refer you to your GP and explain why. The referral is usually about your heart health or another underlying cause rather than the symptom itself, so please do follow it up.

Will you tell my GP?

With your consent, yes. We will let your GP know about any care we provide, because your GP should be aware of your health record. Nothing leaves the pharmacy without your consent, and we will discuss it with you first.

How we can supply treatment without a GP appointment

Some treatments at Berkeley Pharmacy are supplied under a Patient Group Direction, or PGD – a written instruction, signed by a doctor and a pharmacist, that legally allows our trained pharmacists to supply and administer specified medicines to people who meet defined clinical criteria, without a prescription from your GP. If you do not meet the criteria set out in the PGD we cannot supply the treatment, and we will explain why and advise you on the best next step. Our pharmacists also work as independent prescribers where that is appropriate.
