About this service

Measles cases have risen across the UK in recent years, and uptake gaps mean many adults born in the 1980s and 1990s have had only one dose of the MMR vaccine, or none at all. At Berkeley Pharmacy we offer private MMR vaccination for adults and children who missed a dose, with no need for a GP referral. Because having an extra dose is not harmful, we take a sensible approach where records are missing, so you can leave certain you are properly protected.

We take the time to review your vaccination history and talk through your plans, whether you are a student starting university, travelling abroad, or planning a pregnancy. We welcome adults and families from Berkeley, Dursley, Cam, Wotton-under-Edge and across Gloucestershire, and MMR can usually be given at the same appointment as other vaccinations.

What MMR is and how the vaccine helps

MMR is a live vaccine protecting against measles, mumps and rubella. Measles is one of the most infectious diseases known and can cause pneumonia, inflammation of the brain and, rarely, a fatal delayed brain condition, and it is particularly dangerous for babies, pregnant women and people with a weakened immune system. Mumps can cause painful swelling of the glands, and inflammation of the testicles or ovaries. Rubella is usually mild, but if caught in early pregnancy it can cause serious birth defects.

Two doses at least one month apart are needed for reliable protection, and there is no upper age limit. Because it is a live vaccine, pregnancy should be avoided for one month after each dose. Measles cases have risen across the UK in recent years, and uptake gaps mean many adults born in the 1980s and 1990s have had only one dose or none.

Get in touch

Consultation

A private, face-to-face appointment with our pharmacist in our Berkeley consultation room.

Clinical assessment

We review your medical history and confirm whether the service is suitable for you.

Treatment or referral

If it is suitable we treat you the same day; if not, we explain why and advise on the best next step.

What to expect at your appointment

Your appointment begins with a consultation covering your vaccination history, with a sensible approach where records are missing, since having an extra dose is not harmful, and a clear explanation of the two dose schedule.

  • The injection into your upper arm, or the thigh in very young children
  • The second appointment booked before you leave
  • A written record and, with your consent, a note to your GP
  • MMR can usually be given at the same appointment as other vaccinations

Aftercare and safety

A sore arm is common. Six to eleven days after the first dose some people get a mild measles-like reaction with a temperature, a rash and feeling off colour, which is not infectious to others and settles quickly. Around two to three weeks after the dose some people get mild swelling of the glands in the cheek or neck. Paracetamol can be used if needed, and you should avoid pregnancy for one month after each dose.

  • Contact us or NHS 111 if a rash is accompanied by significant illness, and always mention the recent vaccination
  • Keep your vaccination record safe with your other health information
  • Call us on 01453 810316 if you have any questions between doses

Frequently asked questions

I do not know if I have had MMR, can I still have it?

Yes. Having an extra dose of MMR is not harmful, so where records are missing we take a sensible approach and vaccinate rather than leave you uncertain. If you are genuinely unsure, it is safer to have the dose than to remain unprotected.

How many doses of MMR do adults need?

Two doses at least one month apart are needed for reliable protection. Many adults born in the 1980s and 1990s had only one dose at school, so a catch up second dose is often all that is needed, and we book it before you leave.

Is there an upper age limit for MMR?

No, there is no upper age limit. Anyone who has not had two doses can benefit, including older adults who were never offered it and people travelling to areas with measles outbreaks.

Can I have MMR if I am planning a pregnancy?

Yes, provided you are not pregnant now. Because MMR is a live vaccine, you should avoid becoming pregnant for one month after each dose, so it is sensible to plan the course around your pregnancy plans. We will talk through the timing with you.

What are the common side effects of MMR?

A sore arm is common. Six to eleven days after the first dose some people get a mild measles-like reaction with a temperature, a rash and feeling off colour, which is not infectious to others and settles quickly. Around two to three weeks after the dose some people get mild swelling of the glands in the cheek or neck.

Can MMR be given at the same time as other vaccines?

Yes, MMR can usually be given at the same appointment as other vaccinations, which saves you an extra visit. We will review your vaccination history and plans and advise on the best timing for any combined appointments.

How we can supply treatment without a GP appointment

Some treatments at Berkeley Pharmacy are supplied under a Patient Group Direction, or PGD – a written instruction, signed by a doctor and a pharmacist, that legally allows our trained pharmacists to supply and administer specified medicines to people who meet defined clinical criteria, without a prescription from your GP. If you do not meet the criteria set out in the PGD we cannot supply the treatment, and we will explain why and advise you on the best next step. Our pharmacists also work as independent prescribers where that is appropriate.
